Boat maintenance, battling water levels and back to single locks

Boatlife Update: Paint, P

It’s been a busy couple of months aboard, and we’re finally getting a moment to catch our breath and tell you all about it.

A Roof Worth Sweating Over

First up: the roof. We stripped the original stone chip completely off — a genuinely horrible, dirty job that seemed to get everywhere no matter how careful we were. But it was worth it. Eight coats of paint later, we’ve got a roof we’re properly proud of. If you’ve ever wondered whether a full roof revamp is worth the effort, ask us in person — we’ll happily talk your ear off about it now that it’s behind us.

South to the West Midlands

With the roof sorted, we set off cruising from the South Grand Union up to the West Midlands. It’s been a lovely stretch of travelling, though it hasn’t been without its challenges (more on that below).

Carrying the Routes of Remembrance Wreath

The real highlight of the trip, though, has been taking over care of the Routes of Remembrance wreath. We’re proud to be carrying it as we travel, helping raise awareness for the Forces Veterans Afloat Association, who take unloved boats and turn them into homes for veterans who are struggling. It’s a cause close to our hearts, and we’d love for you to get involved too — if you spot us out on the cut, come and say hello and take a photo of yourself with the wreath.

Back to Single Locks

Heading back up to the West Midlands has meant leaving behind the relative luxury of double locks. We’re now hauling The Waka Butty through single locks for the next couple of months — a proper workout, but all part of the boatlife charm.

• 15–16 August — Brownhills Canal Festival, organised by the Lichfield and Hatherton Canal Restoration Trust

• This weekend — Paul will be at the Angel Festival in London with Tarporley

• 5–6 September — Bratch Rally of Boats, organised by the Staffordshire and Worcester Canal Society

• 19–20 September — Tipton RCTA Floating Market

• 3–4 October — Season finale at Banbury (stoppages allowing!)

That’s the plan for the rest of our season. As ever, it’s subject to the whims of the waterways — but we’re looking forward to every mile of it.
